"Continuous Caring for our Patients is OUR way of life."
FOR PATIENTS WHOSE AGE RANGE: 0-18 years of age
This department is your department….
When Manila Doctors (MDH) opened in 1956, there was no division among specialties. The consultant staff of the hospital then included two Pediatricians: Dr. Florencio Quintos and Dr. Naty Alimurung.
It was only in 1974, when Pediatrics as department was established with Dr. Narcisa Fajardo as its first Chairman. The residency training program started with two residents. Dr. Jose Corsiga, who is presently a member of our active staff was the first graduate resident. In1982, the residency program was accredited by the Philippine Pediatric Society.
Since then, under the leadership of the Chair, namely Dr. Leticia Buenaluz (1980-1991), Dr. Eufrosina Melendres (1991-1994) Dr. Lulu Bravo (1994-1998) and presently Dr. Cynthia Cuayo-Juico, the Department of Pediatrics has successfully evolved into a well-organized and highly competent department that it is now. The active staff has increased to 32, 22 are Active I and 10 are Active II, most of whom have subspecialties. The list of visiting consultants is long and continues to grow. The consultant staffs are the opinion leaders and sought after expert speaker in their fields. Excellent service to the patients and their family is OUR way of life.
These are the staffs that also train pediatric residents and interns as future health providers. The complement of resident trainees has swelled to five per year level for a three year PPS-HAB Accredited Residency Program. Part of the vision of the Department of Pediatrics is to provide a complete training program for its Resident Trainees: molding them into well-rounded pediatricians. The program includes: didactics, conferences (interesting cases, CPC’s, M&M), peer reviews, audits, endorsement conferences, teaching hours, written and oral exams, researches, journal reports, evaluation and coaching. The department took a leave from the Inter-hospital once a week conference since two years ago; however the staffs are participating in the different postgraduate workshops and seminars.
To help instill social responsibilities, the department developed its community program and initially fielded residents in the Nuestra Senora de Guia Clinic in Paco, Manila. Then it adopted Sitio Puting Bato in Navotas for three years, followed by Barangay Maricaban in Pasay. . Hands on community organization, program development, implementation and evaluation were experienced by the trainees. At present, it is bridging the gap caused by scarcity of medical practitioner trained for school health by implementing the “Adopt a School Project” and coordinating with the City Schools of Manila.
Twenty percent of its hospital admissions are indigent patients. It medically clears patients for in-house surgical missions for the Department of Surgery, ENT and Ophthalmology. It likewise actively participates in out-of-the-hospital missions.
Research also has become a major thrust of the Training Program. In fact, the scientific papers of the Residents have consistently won awards in the annual research forum of MDH. Some have also gained the distinction of winning in inter-hospital and even national research competitions. A good number have been presented in conventions here and abroad. Its consultants are likewise presenting research projects in national and international for a.
The department also has been cited for its Quality Assurance efforts by the Hospital as well as its participation in the Newborn Screening Program in its pre-legislation stages. It has also been active with free clinics and even fundraising activities for the benefit of its service cases.
In 1999, the Department of Pediatrics marked another milestone by holding its first Postgraduate Course entitled “Pediatrics at Your Fingertips: Uncommon Thoughts on Common Conditions.” Three years later, in 2002, the second installment came, entitled “School Health 101: What Every School, Health Provider Should Know.” As the Department enters its 3oth year of existence, it is holding its third postgraduate course on “School Health 102.”
The Department of Pediatrics takes enormous pride in the quality of its graduates. Most of them attained a certified diplomat status by the Philippine Pediatric Society. A significant number have also pursued fellowship training, and a few presently involved in teaching institutions. Many are in private practice not only in Metro Manila, but also in distant provinces. Whenever they are, they are making their mark by rendering the quality of pediatric care they have been trained.
After three decades, the Department looks forward to the next thirty decades, setting its sights on its constant pursuit of excellence in training, service and research.
PHYSICAL PLANT
The Office of the Department is situated at the third floor of the old Hospital building. Here, the residents convene for their endorsements, meetings and mini-conferences with the medical interns and consultants. It also contains updated pediatric journals and subspecialty books, and serves as repository of the case reports and researches all the residents who have graduated. It serves as call room and workroom after office hours.
A separate area in the office is the Treatment Room, where minor procedures as venoclysis, lumbar tap, abdominal taps, and bone marrow aspirations are done.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a specialized area for NEWBORN Babies requiring intensive care. It has three divisions depending on the degree of care needed by the sick neonate. Healthy newborns are immediately roomed-in with their mothers, since MDH is “Mother-Baby-Friendly Hospital”. All sick newborns and those with co-morbidities that prevent them from rooming–in are taking cared of in the NICU. The NICU has also a referral area which accommodates out-born sick neonates and a family room which serves as a place for family and physician conferences. The DEPARTMENT of PEDIATRICS is a strong advocate of breastfeeding.
The Emergency Room has a section devoted to the pediatric emergency cases. The Out-Patient Department is open five days a week to look after the needs of indigent pediatric patients, {Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity1}. In 1996, a section was created in the OPD for battered children and women. At present most of pediatric in-patients are in Station 3B, other patients are in their room of choice in different floors of the MEW and OLD hospital wings.

Child Neurosciences Center
- The first private center in Manila that adopts the multi-disciplinary approach of a one-stop-shop center that offers comprehensive medical specialty services
- It will reduce the travel time, travel expenses and lost income for family members, as well as decrease the inconvenience of bringing the patient from one clinic and/or hospital to the other dedicated to the care of children with special needs.
- The medical needs of these children are complex and multidisciplinary approach to the management is the key to the best outcome.
- Early diagnosis and intervention are significant determinants of lifelong outcome. Until the establishment of this center, there is none in a private set up that brings together this group of specialists to work together as a team in the management of these children.
