The laboratory services encompass a wide array of vital tasks that support the physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of their patients. Located at the second floor, the laboratory is open twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week. The following are the services offered by the department:
Blood Bank Section: The Blood Bank Section is where the blood and its components are stored and processed for blood transfusions. It is responsible for the screening of blood donors.
Clinical Chemistry Section: The Clinical Chemistry Section is where the chemical composition of blood and other body fluids is determined utilizing the fully automated clinical chemistry analyzers.
Clinical Microscopy Section: The Clinical Microscopy Section performs routine and special procedures to examine urine and fecal specimens.
Drug Testing Laboratory: The Drug Testing Laboratory performs screening tests for prohibited drugs.
Hematology Section: The Hematology Section performs routine and special tests on blood such as complete blood count (CBC), peripheral smear and malarial parasite examination, and tests for hemostasis and coagulation studies. The section also performs cell counts and microscopic examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and other body fluids.
Immunology and Serology Section: The Immunology and Serology Section performs tests that aid in the diagnosis of infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases, allergy and cancer using various immunoassays like chemiluminescene and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. This section also determines the levels of therapeutic drugs.
Microbiology: The section of Microbiology accepts specimens for culture and identification of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and fungi. It also tests the various antibiotics to determine the best agent for therapy of theses isolates. It performs the TORCH assay, non-culture test for Salmonella, dengue fever, Leptospirosis Chlamydia, and other various agents causing disease.
Surgical Pathology (Histopathology) Section: The Surgical Pathology Section is where cells and tissues are submitted for pathologic diagnosis and interpretation from a biopsy or a surgical procedure for routine tissue processing. The section is also specialized in performing autopsies, frozen sections and rapid diagnosis of aspirates from CT Scan/Ultrasound guided biopsies. Immunohistochemical staining procedures are also performed by adept medical technologists and histopathology technician.
The Department of Laboratory Medicine is located at the second floor of the Don Norberto Ty Medical Tower. It is open twenty-four hours (24) hours a day to render quality service for both in-patients and out-patient customers.
Medical laboratory technology encompasses a broad range of vital tasks not only to support the physician in the diagnosis and management of patients but also to give the outmost quality service to meet the primary goals and objectives of the Manila Doctors Hospital of caring for the sick.
True to its philosophy of playing an important role in the total care of patients, the department exerts every effort to work hand in hand with other departments, by rendering prompt and accurate laboratory results for the best possible care to patients.
The Department of Laboratory Medicine of the Manila Doctors Hospital (MDH) offers a long range of routine and special laboratory examinations as performed by adept and efficient medical technologists, supervised and validated by highly competent pathologists in their own fields of expertise among the different sections of the laboratory.
